  • Rites of Passage - a journey through life

We are all travellers on life’s journey and over the years have embraced, or rejected, its Rites of Passage. Some rites, for example birth and death, we cannot choose to accept or neglect. Others are optional although acceptance of them may make ones daily living easier. Rites of Passage frequently become social occasions. Who does not love a wedding? We live in a rapidly changing society and its rites of passage have evolved and changed with the passage of time. It is not uncommon in the present age for a minister to baptise a baby and then attend the engagement party for the happy parents. A few years later their marriage is celebrated in the church with their child as ring bearer. Equally when we drive in both town and country we cannot be oblivious to the roadside/street side shrines which pop up with flags, flowers, teddy-bears or football shirts adorning them. These are modern memorials to grief. In the Autumn 2019 study series we will consider Rites of Passage – a journey through life using the Bible as an handbook to consider the nature of, and changing nature of, Rites of Passage. There will be five thematic Bible Study Sessions – • September 24th – Growing Up • October 8th – Coming of Age • October 29th – Engagement & Marriage • November 12th – Retirement • November 26th - Death Our sessions are: 10am for Tea/Coffee with a 10:30 start. The sessions will finish at about 11:30. We will meet in the John Williams Room. All sessions will be led by Rev David Pattie – further information at urcministryteambath@btinternet.com
